British Kebab Awards 2019 winners announced at glitzy Westminster ceremony

The best of the nation's kebab houses and restaurants were celebrated last night at the glitzy British Kebab Awards in Westminster.

Compered by BBC Radio 1's Scott Mills, the 7th annual event at the Westminster Bridge Park Plaza hotel saw Cockfosters site Skewd Kitchen win the fine-dining restaurant award, while Ahmet Kabayel of Bishop Stortford's Pircio won chef of the year.

Other awards were handed out for sustainability, which went to I Am Doner, Leeds; and best newcomer, which was handed to Doner & Gyros in Aylesbury.

The event, which has become a prominent social event for politicians from all major parties, included a speech from Labour Leader Jeremy Corbyn who thanked the kebab history and hospitality in general for "bringing diversity to our foods and diversity to our diets".

He added: "Our whole way of life and our whole way of eating has completely changed. Thank you to all those people who have come to this country and made their food our food as well."

In a written statement for the awards, Prime Minister Theresa May said that "High streets across the UK benefit from having a successful kebab restaurant on them. I would like to pay tribute to the hard work of their staff and owners, many of whom have built up their businesses from scratch."
