Chef Richard Turner returns with new Birmingham opening

Richard Turner has returned to the Birmingham restaurant scene as the head chef of Maribel, which opened last week.

The restaurant opened on 27 April at the former Edmunds Bistro de Luxe site at Brindleyplace and appears to be a return to fine dining for Turner, who closed his three-AA-rosette restaurant Turners at 69 in January.

The restaurant "offers accessible menus inspired by French-influenced modern British cooking in a relaxed environment" using seasonal ingredients. It serves an 11-course tasting menu, with dishes including Jersey royals, caviar, sea salt, seaweed butter; pigeon, beetroot, artichoke, orange, dandelion and burdock; and chocolate, sea salt, caramel and hazelnut.

Turners at 69 originally opened in 2007 as Turners Restaurant and relaunched in August 2016, with a new casual menu after the chef got "bored" of the canapé/tasting menu/petits fours template.

In March 2017, he told The Caterer: "I was bored of eating it and bored of cooking it. I was doing exactly what I would criticise other people for doing. That's not the kind of cook I am."

The restaurant had held a Michelin star 2009-2017.
