Gidleigh Park tops the Sunday Times Best 100 restaurants list
Michael Caines' two-Michelin-starred restaurant at Gidleigh Park in Chagford, Devon, has been voted the best restaurant in the UK by The Sunday Times.
Britain's Top 100 Restaurants, published by The Sunday Times Food List in partnership with Harden's restaurant guides, named the restaurant top ahead of Heston Blumenthal's Fat Duck and Marcus Wareing at the Berkeley.
Caines said he was ecstatic. "Gidleigh Park has been my pride and joy ever since I was appointed chef in 1994," he said.
"We've gone on to hold two Michelin stars for almost 12 years and my team has never taken their eye off the ball; these awards mean a great deal to us and we feel like Christmas has come early."
Britain's Top 100 Restaurants is dominated by French restaurants, with the likes of Marcus Wareing (3), the Waterside Inn (5), Le Manoir aux Quat'Saisons (6) and Le Gavroche (7) represented in the top 10.
Modern British is the second most represented category, with restaurants including the Fat Duck (2), the Ledbury (4), and Hambleton Hall (11) topping the list.
There are eight Japanese restaurants including Nobu (25/40), Zuma (37) and Roka (48), while Chinese and Indian have six representatives each.
