Gordon Ramsay at The London stripped of its two Michelin stars
Gordon Ramsay at The London has been stripped of its two Michelin stars in the latest publication of the Michelin Guide to New York City Restaurants 2014.
The news comes amid unconfirmed reports that the restaurant may close.
In an interview with Bloomberg's Ryan Sutton, Michael Ellis, the director of guides, said: "There's been quite a bit of instability at the restaurant quite frankly. We've had issues with consistency, and consistency is a huge thing for us."
He continued: "We don't really know what's going on in the kitchen. It was a difficult decision. I personally went there; we've had some very erratic meals. We thought it was the right thing to do."
However, in an article on Grub Street, published in July, it was reported that the management had given notice to approximately 65 employees at Maze and Gordon Ramsay at the London.
A statement from the London at the time stated: "We are currently engaged in ongoing negotiations with Local 6 regarding the renewal of the Gordon Ramsay Union contract. Hotel management and Union leadership have been working diligently to come to an amicable agreement. As a courtesy to our teams and the Union, we need to allow conversations to continue uninterrupted. It would be premature for us to provide information at this time, however we are confident we will be able to release a detailed update by end of this week or very early next week. We greatly appreciate your interest and look forward to sharing updates with you in an expeditious manner."
Meanwhile, Jungsik has become the first Korean restaurant in the USA to be awarded two Michelin stars. Commenting on the news, Michelin stated: "This Korean restaurant, moving up from its one-star designation last year, offers its own distinctive reflection on that region's cuisine, further highlighting the unmatched breadth of New York's diverse international dining scene."
There was no movement at the top, with Per Se, Eleven Madison Park, Masa, The Chef's Table at Brooklyn Fare, Le Bernardin, Jean-Georges and Daniel retaining their three-star status.
The guide awarded a total of 55 restaurants with one star compared to 52 a year ago. Nine restaurants - Aska, Babbo, Carbone, Caviar Russe, Ichimura, Le Restaurant, Lincoln, the Musket Room and Telepan - were awarded a star for the first time.
The publication of the New York guide comes one week after the Michelin Guide to UK and Ireland, where two new two-stars were awarded, at Dinner at the Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park and the Greenhouse in Mayfair, both in London.
