Great Sausage Roll Off contest and fundraising returns for 2016

The Great Sausage Roll Off competition at Barnes pub the Red Lion is back for another year at 7.30pm on Wednesday 27 January, fundraising for children's hospice charity Shooting Star Chase.

Beer and food writer Melissa Cole will host the contest to create the ultimate sausage roll, which is set to be judged by Tom Kemble, head chef at Bonhams restaurant; food critic Charles Campion; BBC Masterchef 2015 finalist Emma Spitzer; and Thane Prince, food writer and judge on BBC Two show the Big Allotment Challenge.

Previous judges have included Gary Usher, head chef of Cheshire's Sticky Walnut and Burnt Truffle restaurants; Edd Kimber, first winner of BBC's the Great British Bake Off; and Charley Boorman, actor and Celebrity MasterChef 2014 runner-up.

Last year's winner was John Grabecki, head chef at BNY Mellon, with his rabbit sausage roll plus black pudding, rabbit leg, loin, maple syrup and Bayonne ham served with rabbit liver parfait, offal crumb and powdered potato. The 2014 winner was Chris Brumby from Ben's Canteen in London's Battersea, who claimed first prize with his All Day Breakfast sausage roll with a Bloody Mary shot.

The Great Sausage Roll Off contest is one of a similar set of competitions hosted around London, which also include the annual Scotch Egg Challenge hosted at the Ship pub in Wandsworth; and the burger-based Slider Decider contest held at Docklands pub the Gun.

Both have previously attracted entries from high-profile chefs at establishments including Ember Yard, the Hinds Head, Duck & Waffle, Cinnamon Soho, Hixter, and Brindisa.

Managed by Claire Morgan and Angus McKean, the Red Lion is a Fuller's pub with a focus on traditional British food, including a regularly-changing menu and specials board.
