Leading pub and restaurant groups boost December sales
Pubs and restaurants saw a boost in like-for-like sales in December 2009 compared to the same period a year ago, according to research from market consultancy Peach Network.
The Coffer Peach Business Tracker, which is run in partnership KPMG, investment bank UBS, and the Coffer Group, recorded an increase of total sales over the period of 4.7%.
Peter Martin of Peach Factory said: "The leading chains have worked hard to attract customers out of their homes, despite the weather, and that effort appears to have paid off. This year, for example, more emphasis has been put on securing pre-booked business for bars and pubs, as well as restaurants, over the Christmas and New Year period."
December marks the ninth consecutive month of positive like-for-likes collectively for the companies making up the Business Tracker group.
The Tracker collects data from 15 major companies to provide an aggregated market figure. Operators involved include managed pub chains Mitchells & Butlers, Whitbread and Punch and casual dining restaurant groups Gondola, Pizza Hut and Tragus.
