Michelin Bib Gourmands rise to 129

A total of 28 establishments have won a new Bib Gourmand in the Michelin Guide 2012, including Russell Norman's new London restaurant da Polpo, as well as sister Indian restaurants Chai St and Mint and Mustard in Cardiff.

Meanwhile, three businesses which won Bib Gourmand status in January have lost the accolade just nine month's later. The unfortunate trio were the Carpenters Arms in Burford, Oxfordshire, the Crown in Burchett's Green, Maidenhead, and La Locanda in Gisburn, Lancashire.

Russell Norman now has two Bib Gourmand operations, with Da Polpo joining his first site, Polpo. He said: "I'm delighted that the Michelin Guide has recognised da Polpo for its commitment to simple tasty food and great value. It's a real pat on the back to the whole team and their hard work since opening just 4 months ago."

Dominic Harman, co-owner of Flinty Red in Bristol which won a Bib Gourmand for the first time, said: "We were hopeful but it's obviously a nice bonus and a pleasant surprise. It's a product of hard work and perseverance. We're very happy with the space we've created and the restaurant we've built up in the past two years.

"We've done a lot of training with our staff who have great product knowledge. Meanwhile, the menu is changed daily so there's constant evolvement, while the wine list is changed regularly, too. We like to think we offer something a little bit different."

The Salt Yard group of London tapas restaurants saw Dehesa and Salt Yard retain their Bib Gourmand status and scooped a hat-trick with sister restaurant Opera Tavern gaining recognition, too. A shocked Simon Mullins, director, said: "Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant. It's fantastic news and we couldn't be happier. It's testament to Ben Tish, who has overall control of the group's kitchens, and Jamie Thicket, Opera Tavern's head chef."

Other new Bib Gourmands include Brawn in Bethnal Green, London, Stravaigin in Glasgow and the Joiners in Bruntingthorpe, Leicestershire.

Bib Gourmands are awarded to establishments that offer good food at a moderate price at £28 (€40 in the Republic of Ireland) for three courses excluding drinks.
