Michelin Guide for Great Britain and Ireland names 28 new restaurants as Bib Gourmands
The 2010 Michelin Guide for Great Britain and Ireland has named 28 new restaurants as Bib Gourmands, reflecting the importance of value for money in a difficult market.
The Bib Gourmand status is awarded to restaurants offering "good food at moderate prices" at £28 or less for three courses, excluding drinks (€40 in Ireland).
The 28 new additions bring the total number of Bib Gourmands to 131, five less than the record number of 136 in the 2009 guide.
Restaurants recognised include Bocca di Lupo, Terroirs and Le Provence in London; as well as Tony's Table in Edinburgh, and Oregano in Ballyclare, Northern Ireland.
Outside London, Whites in Beverley, East Yorkshire; The Bee in Windlesham, Surrey; and Grainger Rooms in Newcastle upon Tyne also received recognition.
The Republic of Ireland was particularly fruitful with seven restaurants achieving Bib Gourmand status. These include La Maison, The Pig's Ear and Pichet in Dublin; White Sage in Adare; and O'Brian Chop House in Lismore.
Derek Bulmer, editor of Michelin's Great Britain & Ireland and London guides, said: "Chefs have had to be more resourceful and restaurants have had to adapt to changing eating habits. Some have even introduced ‘credit crunch' menus to help fight the recession.
"Long-established restaurants have proved to be resilient but we have also seen plenty of new openings."
