Midsummer House named second-best restaurant in the world by TripAdvisor

Daniel Clifford's two-Michelin-starred Midsummer House has been named the second-best dining establishment in the world by the 2014 Travellers' Choice Restaurant awards, announced today by online reviews site TripAdvisor.

The awards honour travellers' favourite fine dining establishments in the world, based on millions of reviews on TripAdvisor.

Clifford, who is twice a Great British Menu winner, also took the UK top spot for the first time with Midsummer House in Cambridge.

He said: "I am delighted that Midsummer House has been named the second best restaurant in the world in these awards. TripAdvisor has become such a huge platform for guests to communicate experiences within our industry. At Midsummer House we welcome feedback from our guests and therefore monitor our TripAdvisor page closely."

"I am so proud of the team and what we have achieved in the last 12 months, it is lovely this has been acknowledged with this award. The fact that these awards are based on customer feedback makes us so happy, as we strive to make our Cambridge restaurant the best experience for all of our diners."

Meanwhile, two other UK restaurants enter the world's top 10 - Belmond Le Manoir Aux Quat'Saisons in Great Milton at number eight, and Michel Roux Jr.'s Le Gavroche in London at number nine.

The results mean that the UK is now home to more of the world's top 10 fine-dining restaurants than any other country bar Spain, according to TripAdvisor's ratings.

"Over half of British travellers have visited a particular destination just to go to a specific restaurant, so a great fine dining establishment can give a real visitor boost not just to that business, but to the local area too," commented TripAdvisor spokesperson, James Kay, "With winning restaurants spread right across the UK, these awards are further proof of the country's thriving fine-dining scene."

A survey of over 3,000 British travellers by TripAdvisor also revealed that a third (33%) have visited a restaurant because of its celebrity chef, while more than two thirds of those who go to fine-dining restaurants (69%) seek recommendations from online reviews.
