Nearly 100 fish and chip shops shortlisted for national award

Nearly a hundred fish and chip shops have been shortlisted for the National Fish and Chip Shop of the Year competition 2009.

Now in its 22nd year, the competition, which organised by the Sea Fish Industry Authority (Seafish), recognises the quality, value and choice offered by fish and chip shops across the UK.

Nikki Hawkins, foodservice and events manager at Seafish, said fish and chip shops are increasingly focused on sustainability.

"As customers become more aware of environmental issues, fish and chip shops are stocking alternative varieties of fish and taking responsibility for ensuring a sustainable future for the industry and our awards reflect this change," she said.

The 100 shortlisted chippies, who will be assessed by mystery judges, will be whittled down to 19 area winners in October and 10 finalists thereafter. The winner will be announced at a grand final held in January.

The mystery judges will assess the chip shops on product quality, customer service, hygiene, staff training and approaches to sustainable sourcing.

Previous winners of the competition have seen profits increase by up to 40% within months of winning the award, according to Seafish.
