Sykes has been with the company since 2005. He has operational responsibility for GBK, which will this week open its 25th site in London's Portobello Road.

The Gourmet Burger Kitchen (GBK) and Bombay Bicycle owner was set up in 2003 by ex PizzaExpress directors David Page and Paul Campbell.

Campbell, chief executive of Clapham House, said: "I am delighted to announce the appointment of David to the board. His appointment is recognition of the strong progress made and our exciting plans for GBK."

Three GBKs operate under franchise in Dubai and Kuwait.
