Openings: Suvlaki
Suvlaki, a modern, fast-casual restaurant serving Greek street food, has opened in London's Soho on Bateman Street. Billed as an Athenian grillhouse, it offers lunch and dinner, takeaway and delivery. Greek chef Elias Mamalakis, who frequently appears on TV in his home country, has been brought on board as consultant chef, and has designed several dishes for the venue. The restaurant is owned by Yannis Theodorakakos, who came to the UK in 1997 from his home town of Athens, and his business partner Michael Kantartzis, a heart surgeon. The restaurant takes its design cue from Athens' notorious satirical graffiti, which reflects an urban side of Greece far removed from touristic clichés.
