Owners of fine-dining restaurant the Elephant to open second site

The owners of the Michelin-starred restaurant the Elephant in Torquay, Devon, are to open a second eaterie next month.

The new venture, which will be called the Room, is due to open its doors on 3 April. It will be a 24-cover fine-dining restaurant on the first floor above the existing restaurant, overlooking Torquay's bay.

The plans also include a makeover for the Elephant, turning it into a more relaxed dining room called the Elephant Brasserie.

Head chef-proprietor Simon Hulstone told Caterer he wanted to maintain the restaurant's Michelin star but provide a more consistent fine-dining experience in the smaller setting of the Room.

"People have a certain perception of Michelin-starred restaurants and the Torquay locals can't support us all year round," he said.

"That's why we've decided to move the fine-dining restaurant into the smaller venue upstairs and give people a second, less formal option with the Elephant Brasserie."
