Peter Gordon to launch new London restaurant

Celebrity chef Peter Gordon, chef-proprietor of the Providores and Tapa Room, is set to open a new restaurant in London's West End next month.

The New Zealand-born chef has teamed up with Providores and Tapa Room co-owner Michael McGrath and the original founders of Gourmet Burger Kitchen, Adam Wills and Brandon Allen, to launch Kopapa in Covent Garden in early December.

The new restaurant, which will be open from breakfast through to dinner seven days a week, will showcase Gordon's signature fusion-style cooking which makes use of global ingredients. Dishes will include Turkish poached eggs with whipped yogurt and hot chilli butter; seared yellowfin tuna with nori sauce, dashi jelly and jicama slaw; and New Zealand lamb chops on smoked sweet potato mash with braised butter beans and pickled garlic tapenade.

Interiors at Kopapa are being designed by Douglas Stuart and will reflect Gordon's culinary style by featuring international elements such as Turkish tiled floors and Autobahn designed bench seats.

Gordon said he was delighted about the project. "Michael and I have been good friends with Adam and Brandon for over 10 years and we're looking forward to this new collaboration," he said.

"I'm thrilled to be able to offer the style of food we've been serving for the past nine years at the Providores in Marylebone to another favourite area of London."

Gordon moved to London in 1989 where he set up the Sugar Club in Notting Hill and Soho. Ten years later he left and opened the Providores and Tapa Room in 2001 with McGrath. He is the author of six cookbooks and consultant chef to several restaurants including Changa and Muzedechanga in Istanbul and Bellota in Auckland, New Zealand. He is also executive chef at Dine by Peter Gordon in Auckland.

Last year, Gordon was awarded the New Zealand Order of Merit.
