Plant-based burger company to crowdfund first restaurant

Artisan veggie burger company Vurger Co has launched a crowdfunding campaign to fund its first permanent site.

The company launched its £180,000 crowdfunding campaign via Crowd Cube today to fund its first restaurant opening in early 2018 in London, and has already raised more than £42,000 with 29 days to go. A range of rewards has been set up to encourage support including a dinner with the co-founders, a private tasting event for up to 15 friends and the chance to dine free for life.

The company has also recruited the co-owners of London vegetarian restaurant Vanilla Black, Andrew Dargue and Donna Conroy, to consult on the restaurant.

Co-founders Neil Potts and Rachel Hugh started the Vurger Co to offer fast, natural plant-based food, using vegetables, seeds, nuts and legumes to create a plant-based burger, and have been running pop-ups in London markets and festivals.

In the months ahead, Vurger Co will be hosting a temporary pop-up in Bethnal Green, east London.

Available dishes will include the Classic (smoky black beans with peppers and corn topped with tomato, red onion and Vurger sauce), the Mexican (spiced jalapeno and pepper bean patty topped with hot salsa, chilli mayo and smashed avocado) and the Auburger (Chipotle smoky aubergine, red onion and chickpea patty topped with cumin mayo and pickled cabbage) with sides such as skin-on chips, sweet potato chips, truffle mac'n'cheese and Vurger slaw.
