Sat Bains to receive an honorary degree from the University of Nottingham
Sat Bains, who was awarded two Michelin stars for his eponymous restaurant with rooms last October, has been awarded an honorary degree from the University of Nottingham.
Bains was named as a graduate by the university yesterday and will be awarded his degree, a Master of Arts, honoris causa, on Tuesday.
According to This is Nottingham, the awards are given in recognition of exceptional achievements in the arts, academia, business, public service, sport, and charity.
Bains told Caterer and Hotelkeeper: "I'm overwhelmed as I wasn't very good at school. But it goes to show that with perseverance, determination and the best team, the world's your oyster.
"Hopefully this will inspire others to absolutely believe in everything they do. We are in the industry for the long game, not the glory."
Bains first caught the industry's eye when he won the Roux Scholarship in 1999. He won Nottingham's first Michelin star in 2003 and was awarded a second star last year. The dining room at Restaurant Sat Bains with Rooms holds five AA rosettes, while the accommodation has a three-red-star rating from the AA.
His support of local suppliers and his work placing the East Midlands on the culinary map resulted in an Honorary Doctorate of Professional Practice by the University of Derby Buxton in October 2010.
