Terry Laybourne to open new Newcastle pub

Chef and restaurateur Terry Laybourne's company, 21 Hospitality Group, is to open a new pub in Newcastle.

The new business, called the Broad Chare, sits on Newcastle's Quayside and is being developed in partnership with nearby Live Theatre. It will be housed over two floors of an adjoining building to the main theatre. Laybourne already occupies another ground floor building within Live Theatre's complex, operating the modern Italian restaurant Caffe Vivo.

Cafe 21 sous chef Chris Eagle is being promoted to head chef at the pub, while Steve Dunn, manager at Caffe Vivo, will be heading the new pub operation.

The business is set to open in early May and is recruiting for an assistant manager, a bar supervisor, bar tenders, waiting staff, sous chef, chefs de partie, commis chefs and kitchen porters.

Laybourne said: "This is an exciting time for the group. Construction work is well under way on the new Broad Chare and this is creating a wide range of job opportunities for kitchen and front of house staff.

"We are creating jobs for young apprentices as well as for those with proven cooking, waiting and management skills. As a company we embrace continuous training, whether that's developing existing skills or investing in fresh talent."

Chris Eagle, who joined 21 Hospitality Group as an apprentice chef in 2002, said: "This is a big promotion and great opportunity for me. Terry always invests in his staff. He has regularly encouraged me to learn from others and even paid for me to spend part of a summer at a Michelin-starred restaurant in France."

The new pub will be open seven days a week, focusing on real ale and craft beers, and the business is working with Wylam Brewery to develop a bespoke ale, brewed exclusively for 21 Hospitality Group.
