Third Macellaio restaurant to open in Southwark
Macellaio RC is opening its third London restaurant at the Union Street Arches development in Southwark in September.
Macellaio, Italian for ‘butcher', opened its first restaurant in South Kensington in 2012, offering north Italian cuisine and specialising in beef, before opening its second London offering at Exmouth Market in 2015, adding "red meat of the sea" to the menu.
The new site will introduce a theatrical in-house butchery and Ligurian bakery. Inspired by the theatres in the area, the beef will be dry-aged on site, and a stage will extend into the restaurant to showcase the best cuts of the day. Butchers and chefs will also prepare steaks, carpaccios, tartares and cured meats in front of guests on a white marble butcher's block.
The menu itself will feature fassone beef from small artisan farms in north-west Italy, with dishes prepared simply, seasoned with rock salt and Tuscan olive oil.
Macellaio hired high-end restaurant property specialist Dean Gambles & Co to find and secure the premises for the brand's next opening. The 1,200 sq ft brick arches of the venue, set back from the street, soar to 6m at their apex.
Roberto Costa, Macellaio founder, said: "I wanted to find a property that had space and drama, and the arch that Dean Gambles secured has blown my mind! It's perfect for what we want achieve."
