Top coffee shop groups 2009

Whitbread's Costa Coffee brand has remained the UK's biggest coffee chain for a second year running, despite no overall change in the number of stores.

Costa operated 750 outlets in 2009, putting it well ahead of its nearest rival, Starbucks, which grew by 65 stores to total 715.

The table of leading coffee shops has been expanded with the addition of four new names for 2009: AMT Coffee, Café Thorton's, Hilton's Café Cino, and Muffin Break.

These facts and figures are reported in British Hospitality: Trends and Statistics 2009, published by the British Hospitality Association.
The full report (which is free to BHA members) can be bought for £250 (for the printed version) or £175 (for a PDF file). Prices are progressively discounted as the year moves on. For enquiries or orders, phone 0207 404 7744 or contact Philippa Brady.
