Yorskhire chippie named best in the UK

Fish and Chips at 149 in Bridlington, Yorkshire, has been named the 2011 Fish & Chip Shop of the Year.

The East Yorkshire chippie beat 10 other regional finalists to win the national title of the annual competition, which is run by seafood authority Seafish.

Shop owners Matthew Silk and Tracy Poskitt were named as winners of the title, having made it through judging, a customer vote, taste tests, two shop inspections and a presentation to a panel of industry experts.

Chip shops are judged on not only the quality of their product but also their sourcing, customer service, food hygiene, staff training and community spirit.

Peck Ish Fish and Chips in Camelford, Cornwall, came in second place, with Seniors at Marsh Mill in Thornton, Lancashire, in third position.

Poskitt said wining the awards was "a dream come true".

"We've been working for many years to reach these heights and owe this award to our dedicated team and loyal customers whose support has made this possible," she said.

The Observer‘s food critic, Jay Rayner, who presented the awards, added: "Britain's chippies are a vital part of our food culture, they have seen us through times of war and peace and many of them continue to make a serious contribution to the debate on food, through their pioneering approach to fish stock sustainability. I'm looking forward to working my way through the top 10."

The top 10 fish and chip shops by region are:
Doms Chip Shop, Thornton, Fife
Wales: Finnegans, Bridgend
Northern Ireland: Pit Stop Fast Food & Bistro, Kikeel
North-east England: Fish and Chips at 149, Bridlington
