Satay House siblings launch sister restaurant Sudu

The family behind Satay House, the longest-running Malaysian restaurant in London, has launched a sister restaurant in Queen's Park.

Siblings Fatizah and Irqam Shawal are continuing the nearly 50-year legacy of their parents' restaurant, with the opening of Sudu, which plays on the Malaysian-style ‘kopitiam' coffee shops of South-East Asia, last month.

The idea for Sudu arose three years ago during lockdown, when the family had to adapt to the takeaway market to keep Satay House in business.

Offering a more casual selection of traditional Malaysian cuisine, Sudu's menu includes the ‘Mee George Town', a spicy yellow wheat noodle stir-fried with tofu, prawn, beef, peanut, egg, potato; and the ‘Char Kway Teow', which features flat rice noodles stir-fried with prawns, squid, egg, mustard green, chives and beansprouts.

The brother and sister duo said: "There's no way we could carry on our parents' legacy and not serve up my dad's Beef Rendang, Nasi Goreng, Nasi Lemak or Nasi Cam Cam (Nasi Campur).

"These recipes have been in our family for nearly 50 years and we would have done a disservice to Sudu by not including them on the menu because they're so delicious and so popular.

"We like to think of Sudu has a ‘cool younger sister' to Satay House. We've had so much fun creating the menu and we hope it shows."

The Shawals are also in the process of devising a Malaysian breakfast menu, as well as a range of cocktails and snacks to go with their speakeasy-style bar, which will be located in the basement.
