Sodexo has hosted a reception at the House of Commons to launch a social mobility impact report in partnership with the Purpose Coalition.
Leaders from sectors including professional services, health, education and government were present to demonstrate their commitment to improving social mobility across the UK.
The report Supporting People, Strengthening Places highlights the work that Sodexo has done to make a positive impact, including offering 4,000 young people work experience opportunities, demonstrating a 35% increase in apprenticeship starts, and the transfer of almost £3m in Apprenticeship Levy funding to SMEs, charities and purpose led organisations.
In addition the report details the 800 employment opportunities Sodexo has created through its Starting Fresh campaign, which helps people with convictions access employment, and the work it has done with charity partners to support 11 million people supported through the Stop Hunger Foundation.
Sodexo UK & Ireland chief executive Jean Renton said: "We’re proud of the progress we’ve made, but we know there is still much more to do. This report shows what’s possible when businesses choose to create opportunities for all as part of their strategy. When we invest in people, the benefits extend far beyond the individual.
Businesses become stronger, communities become more resilient and local economies grow. This leads to more jobs, more opportunities and a ripple effect that benefits the whole of society.”
The annual The Purpose Coalition Summer Reception was hosted by its chair, Rt Hon Justine Greening. She added: "Social mobility has never been the responsibility of government alone. If we are serious about ensuring where someone starts in life does not determine where they finish, then employers, educators, charities and policymakers must work together with a shared sense of purpose.
"Sodexo UK & Ireland has consistently demonstrated what that leadership looks like. Through its long-standing commitment to creating opportunity for its colleagues, supply chain and the communities it serves, it continues to show how responsible business can deliver lasting social impact alongside commercial success. Its latest Social Mobility Impact Report is a powerful example of that commitment in action."
