Tube strike dates announced for September

London Underground workers are set to strike next month in a dispute over pay.

Trade union RMT said the strikes will take place across the tube network for seven days starting from 5 September, which will cause “significant disruption”.  

Members voted in favour of the strike “in overwhelming numbers” after management refused to “engage seriously” with demands on pay, fatigue management and extreme shift patterns, the union said.

In a separate dispute over pay and conditions, staff on the Docklands Light Railway will also participate in industrial action in the week beginning 7 September.

Eddie Dempsey, RMT general secretary, said: “Our members are doing a fantastic job to keep our capital moving and work strenuous shift patterns to make sure Londoners get to their destinations around the clock.

“RMT will continue to engage LU management with a view to seeking a revised offer in order to reach a negotiated settlement.”

Last November, the RMT union ditched plans for strike action across the London Underground.

The hospitality industry has suffered £4b in lost sales as a result of network disruption over the past three years, according to UKHospitality.
