Agri wins innovation award for food waste collection service
Northampton-based Agri ](http://www.agrienergy.co.uk)has won an innovation award for its food waste collection service for caterers and food manufacturers.
Its weekly collection service, which diverts organic waste from landfill to anaerobic digestion (AD) plants for recycling into biofuels and compost, scooped the AD and Biogas Association's Innovation in Waste Collection award.
"The system we have developed is now so effective at reducing the carbon emissions and waste disposal costs for our customers, we are rolling it out across the country," said Richard Allsop, development director at Agri.
"We have developed a valued link in the supply chain between customers who have food waste to collect and AD plants who need food waste to process biogas."
Allsop said many of Agri's customers - who include caterers, hospitals, schools, offices, pubs, retailers, hotels and food manufacturers - can now claim 97% landfill avoidance, a valuable benefit with landfill costs set to soar to £80 per tonne by 2014.
Agri, which is part of the ABP Food Group, can recycle food waste for its customers from just £9.50 a week.
