Pre-prepared spud specialist" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer">Avikohas launched two pilot projects aimed at radically reducing the carbon dioxide emissions of its transport fleet.

It has invested in cryogenic refrigeration units that recycle carbon dioxide produced during manufacturing as a coolant to control temperatures in the vehicles' cargo areas. As well as being silent, the technology produces 75% less carbon dioxide than traditional refrigeration units that run on diesel generators.

The group has also bought two ‘E-mission Low' vehicles with trailers where temperatures are also controlled by carbon dioxide. The vans run on normal LPG fuel as well as diesel, making them up to 15% cleaner than current emission standards.

"Sustainability is a cornerstone of everything we try to do at Aviko," said general manager Mohammed Essa. "These measures to drastically reduce our carbon footprint by investing in some of the most innovative new technologies, plus the pledge to switch to sustainable palm oil by 2015 represent real and credible progress along our CSR strategy timeline."
