Beverage Standards Association announces 2012 awards winners
The winners of the 2012 Beverage Standards Awards have been announced. They include, in the Five Cup Winner category: Pumphrey's Coffee Centre and Brewing Emporium, Newcastle; Cafelicious, Swindon; Coffee Fix, Gatley; Spring Espresso, York; and Tea Monkey in Milton Keynes.
Best Drink Awards went to: Cafelicious in Swindon for the best hot chocolate; etekeat Tea Boutique in Edinburgh for Best Tea; and Silvio's of London for the Best Flat White.
Chairman of the judges Ranald Paterson said: "The BSA national accreditation scheme means the general public can access coffee shops in the same way as restaurants by seeing how many coffee cups an outlet has been awarded or by seeing if they've won a Best Drink Award.
"All of our winners are to be congratulated for serving the very highest-quality drinks and giving the very best service.
"Our judging is stringent. We judge entries not only on the quality and presentation of drinks but also the ambience, hospitality, service, knowledge, cleanliness, hygiene, menu range and descriptions, disabled accessibility, training and - for the first time this year - their sustainability procedures."
The awards standards go from One Cup (good) to Four Cup (exceptional) and Five Cup (outstanding). The association is looking forward to seeing these certificates on windows and doors, telling members of the public that they serve high-quality beverages.
The aims of the awards are to establish nationally recognised standards for all cafés and restaurants, identify and recognise excellence of drinks quality in the café market, encourage best service standards and support good staff development and training.
