Brakes Group receives environmental certification
Brakes Group has been awarded certification to the international environmental standard ISO 14001.
Attaining the standard demonstrates the group's continued efforts to reduce its impact on the environment and its compliance to environmental legislation.
Brakes used its environmental management system (EMS) to identify its key environmental concerns develop environmental policies and set objectives and targets. The EMS is intranet based, providing all employees with access to up-to-date information.
Its achievements to date include sustainable sourcing and raising industry awareness of over-fishing issues, reducing food miles, operating more energy efficient premises and switching to alternative packaging solutions.
From 2007 to 2008 the group increased recycling activity from 10 to 40% and, where possible, reduced packaging by up to 20% on many own brand products, minimising not only the organisation's waste but subsequently their customers' waste too.
The organisation also appointed a number of environmental management champions to ensure the group's objectives are fully communicated and processes are applied.
