Britain's best sandwich designers unveiled
Sumaya El Kroni of Greencore in Bromley-by-Bow was the overall winner of the Sandwich Designer of the Year 2011 awards.
She scooped the accolade as the UK's finest sandwich creator for her chicken, lemon, coriander, roast vegetable and salad flat bread sandwich, which also won the Moy Park-sponsored chicken category in the finals, held in London's Lancaster hotel after a series of four regional heats.
The judges were also impressed by the unusual combination of French cheese and Indian ingredients that won the Bel UK/Cheese Cellar Company-sponsored category for sandwiches using Smoked Port Salut.
"It really epitomises the sort of creativity that we're looking to recognise in sandwich designing," said judge Camilla Deane. "Experimenting with different ingredients can lead to a surprising but ultimately award-winning sandwich."
