Discrete fire escape ladder from Banks

The UK's first hotel death by fire in 38 years, at a Newquay hotel last August, has prompted Banks Fire Escape Ladders to target the hospitality sector with a discreet, affordable solution that it has been selling into the domestic market.

The Down and Out ladder, which holds US and UK patents, will fit under a window sill or radiator in an easy-to-fit mounting no bigger than a man-size tissue box (12in x 9in x 3in). To use, guests simply remove the lid and throw the ladder out of the window.

Weighing less than 1kg, the ladder can support up to 1,000lb or three people, and each rung can carry a 20-stone weight.

The main stay is made from strong braided cord, and the rungs, which are ribbed to prevent slipping, are constructed from flame-retardant copolymer.

Triangular stand-offs hold the rungs away from the wall to prevent fingers becoming trapped.

Available in four lengths ranging from 14ft to 28ft, the ladders are priced from less than £100 each, with discounts on multiple buys.
