Brakes' Healthier Choices Breaded Pork Loin Steaks have been entered in the Kids Main Meals section of Caterer's Excellence in Food and Drink Awards 2009.
Take-up of school meals was significantly down following the introduction of the school meal standards. One of the key targets for these standards was to reduce the amount of fried food offered in school meals, including products that are pre-fried in the manufacturing process.
The result was a massive reduction in the frequency and range of very popular coated products on school menus. There need be nothing inherently unhealthy about a breaded product provided that it is not high in fat (i.e. not pre-fried) and has a good quality core.
With this in mind Brakes developed Smartcrumb, a high quality non-fried breadcrumb coating that we apply to a range of cores including fish and chicken. This range of non-fried, healthy coated products have a natural, whole muscle meat or fish core and, due to their popularity with children, are helping to boost uptake of healthier school meals.
This latest introduction expands the range into pork loin, a relatively low cost & naturally low fat cut of red meat that provides a valuable source of iron and hence lends itself to school catering.
