New British strawberry variety from Total Berry
Total Berry, part of fresh produce supplier Total Worldfresh, has unveiled a new premium British strawberry variety.
Merit is an everbearing strawberry that fruits continuously at a steady rate from June to September. The variety is described as being sweet tasting with a floral aroma like a traditional British strawberry and its good skin integrity means it is less prone to bruising, keeps its attractive conical shape and lasts longer than most strawberries under refrigeration.
Merit will be sold exclusively in the UK market and Ian Waller, director of Total Berry, believes it will compete effectively with existing premium varieties. "The light-red glossy colour and conic shape of the Merit, with a sweet traditional taste and an excellent shelf life, make it a competitive premium berry," he said.
