New wholesaler My Fish Company to launch apprenticeships

A new fish wholesaler in Fleetwood, Lancashire, is planning to help train the next generation of the town's fish industry.

My Fish Company, which was set up by Gary Apps and Kim Ashton in September this year with support from Lloyds Bank Commercial Banking, operates from two units totalling 7,500 sq ft at the Harbour Trading Estate in Fleetwood and has also won a deal to supply upmarket North-East-based supermarket group Booths.

Having secured a six-figure investment sum upon starting up, the company is also planning to offer apprenticeships early next year in addition to its 25 new staff roles.

Commenting on the company's development, Apps said: "This has been a massive achievement for us. We want to build a business that is known for supplying the highest quality fish and seafood to hotels and restaurants across the North West. We want to grow, but without losing our attention to detail and focus on excellent customer care. The team that has come together has more than 200 years combined experience in the fish and seafood trade, and we place a lot of value on our ethics around people, product, and passion."

Johnathon Townsend, relationship manager at Lloyds Bank Commercial Banking, said: "Fleetwood has a very proud history in the fish industry and it is fantastic to see My Fish Company thriving in the town. [Apps and Ashton] have put a fantastic team of people together and it is great to be able to back their ambition."

The company was supported by a loan from Lloyds Bank Commercial Banking, backed by the Enterprise Finance Guarantee, in which the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills provides a partial guarantee for the loan.

The company also secured a Lloyds Bank Commercial Finance invoice discounting line, which gives immediate access to up to 90% of the value of issued invoices, helping to boost the businesses' cash flow.
