Plusfood hopes poultry will drive growth

Plusfood, a member of the Brasil Foods (BRF) group and the largest poultry exporter in the world yesterday set about reasserting itself as a leading food business in the UK and Europe.

As a group BRF processes 6.7 million units of poultry and 39,300 head of pork and cattle per day. It has more than 100,000 employees across the World.

Plusfood is focusing on direct contact with food service and retail customers in Europe and has various brands, including Fribo, Hot n Kickin Chicken, Perdix, Homestyle Kitchen and Alyn Valley.

According to a Mintel report entitled Chicken - Retail Trends and Foodservice Opportunities, chicken out of home is very important to consumers choosing their meal because of to its versatile cooking options - ie. baked, grilled or fried. 49% of diners questioned wanted more fast-food options (eg, not just burgers, pizza, etc), and 51% wished there were healthier/lower-calorie fast-food options available - and there is a definite trend towards chicken being perceived as a product that keeps you "fuller for longer" as well as a "light" product.

Chicken is also easily paired with the new food trends in the market - Mexican, Japanese and fast-appearing Caribbean, Eastern European and Moroccan.
