Reformulated Knorr Italian Tomato sauces from Unilever

With the increasing demand for healthier food in schools, Unilever Foodsolutions has reformulated its Knorr Italian Tomato Sauces to offer a nutritious option for caterers looking to create Italian dishes.

There are seven recipes in the range - Bolognese, Tuscan Bean, Creamy Tomato and Pesto, Tomato and Basil, Chasseur, Spicy Arrabbiata, and Vegetale - and most contain enough tomatoes and vegetables in one 90ml serving to provide one portion towards the recommended five-a-day fruit and vegetable intake (110ml serving in the case of Creamy Tomato and Pesto).

The improved recipes have been formulated to meet the UK Food Standards Agency (FSA) 2010 Salt Reduction Targets and they also meet the FSA Target Nutrient Specifications for sauces used in school meals for sodium, fat and saturated fat.

All varieties are suitable for vegetarians and free from gluten, MSG, artificial colours and flavours. All varieties except Creamy Tomato and Pesto and Vegetale are low-fat; all except Creamy Tomato and Pesto are lactose-free and suitable for vegans; and all except Vegetale are free from artificial preservatives.

All varieties supply one portion (80g) of fruit and vegetables in a 65ml serving except Creamy Tomato and Pesto, which supplies one portion in a 110ml serving, and Arrabiata, one portion in 75ml. The 2.25-litre containers have an ambient shelf life of 12 months.
