Supplier press release: Recognising Outstanding newcomers in school catering

Bernard Matthews Foodservice and its Big Green Tick range are once again supporting the education sector by sponsoring Newcomer of the Year in the EDUcatering Excellence Awards.

The prestigious award is one of 13 due to be presented to the leading lights of school catering at a glittering ceremony at the five star Royal Garden Hotel in Kensington on Monday, October 15th.

The category is open to new employees at any level, who have worked for their present employer for less than a year at the date of nomination, shown outstanding commitment to their new role and enhanced the performance of the school meal provision.

Following the judging process, three nominees from each category will be invited to the awards ceremony, where the winners will be announced in front of an audience of hundreds.

"Duncan Marsh, general manager for Bernard Matthews Foodservice, said: "Caterers entering foodservice today have to meet so many expectations, nowhere more so than in school catering, where balancing children's tastes with School Food Trust guidelines is a huge challenge in itself.

"The Newcomer of the Year award recognises this, although it is not only open to caterers who are new to the industry, but also those who have brought their skills, dedication and experience with them to a new job. Following in the footsteps of last year's winner, Neal Tipper, we look forward to rewarding a shining light who has made a real impression in a short amount of time."

Bernard Matthews Foodservice is committed to the education sector, sponsoring this year's Get Traditional Day of LACA's National School Meals Week in November, and the Craft Guild of Chefs' Family Food Appreciation workshops, supporting LACA's 2011 ParentPay research, where 95.9% of parents agreed with the statement, "My child should learn to cook at school."

Its frozen, Big Green Tick range of Quality British turkey products is developed in conjunction with LEAs and school caterers, and includes a selection of roast cuts, as well as ingredient products including IQF Turkey Thigh Mince and Diced Turkey Thigh, ready-to-eat Roast and mild Tikka Turkey Breast Chunks, and Turkey Burgers and Meatballs.

Easy to prepare, cook and serve, Big Green Tick products are all free from artificial colours, flavours, preservatives and hydrogenated vegetable oils. They are Quality British Turkey and Assured Foods (Red Tractor) certified, with each turkey reared on the company's own farms across Norfolk, Suffolk Lincolnshire in line with the Farm Animal Welfare Council's ‘5 Freedoms'.

As a cost-effective, low in saturated fat ingredient, British turkey breast is versatile enough to be used in a whole host of dishes and is becoming a popular ingredient for use all year round, with UK turkey consumption soaring by 20 percent in the last year1.
