Supplier press release: Research Highlights Opportunities for Operators to Increase Sales of Ice Cream

Soft serve ice cream is an untapped source of revenue, according to new research, with opportunities to increase frozen dessert sales during different day parts and drive impulse purchases.

The independent consumer research, commissioned by Kerrymaid Angelito, shows there is a significant chance for establishments currently not serving ice cream to capitalise on the popular dessert, with 59% of consumers surveyed saying they would buy an ice cream sundae if they were more readily available from more outlets.

More than half of respondents agree ice cream sundaes are great on their own, without a meal, and 40% could see themselves choosing a sundae instead of a cake or other snack. Adrian Coulter, development chef for Kerrymaid Angelito, comments: "This demonstrates the potential to increase sales of ice cream at different times of day, such as mid-morning or during the afternoon. "

Ice cream sundaes are identified by 46% of consumers as an impulse purchase, with appetising photography cited as a key driver in achieving spontaneous sales. Adrian adds: "So, with good availability and strong marketing, innovative operators can encourage consumers into unplanned sales."

There is demand for dessert menus to be regularly refreshed and to include healthy options like fruit toppings. Adrian says: "Seasonal recipes keeps a menu revitalised and appealing. Operators could consider adding warm brownie pieces in winter and fresh strawberries in summer."

Health is becoming a more prominent factor in food choices and consumers will enjoy the fact Kerrymaid Angelito is lower in calories and saturated fat than other ice cream products.

Kerrymaid Angelito offers a range of POS to allow ice cream operators to shout about their offer. For example, swing signs, flags, bunting, large 6ft cones and posters can all stimulate spontaneous purchases.

Currently ice cream centred desserts account for 53% of the 800 million desserts consumed in the UK, but the research shows there is potential for further growth.

Kerrymaid Angelito offers excellent revenue opportunities of up to £399 per case, based on selling 100 deluxe sundaes at £3.99 each. Alternatively, operators could sell 140 cones with £252 revenue, or 140 regular sundaes with £308 revenue.
