Tetley champions hydration within care homes

Tetley has announced a series of initiatives to help provide education and understanding of hydration within care homes and care home catering.

The beverage brand is the headline sponsor of Nutrition and Hydration Week 2017 and is supporting the team in providing strategic advice and support to care homes across the UK. The activities aim to highlight, promote and celebrate improvements in the provision of nutrition and hydration locally, nationally and globally, focussing on nutrition and hydration across the health and social care sectors.

As part of the initiative, Tetley is partnering with Martin McKee, head chef at the Hawthorns Aldridge retirement and care home, winner of the 2017 NACC regional final for Care Cook of the Year. He will be working with Tetley as a brand ambassador to provide tailored hydration advice to care home caterers.

Tetley is collaborating with McKee to put together a 10-step ‘Hydration Help Sheet' available to download from the Tetley Tea Academy website, offering hints and tips on how tea can support resident hydration within the care environment.

The brand will also be supporting the National Association of Care Home Caterers (NACC) across 2017 as a premier partner, attending the Training & Development Forum at the East Midlands Conference Centre this October.

Caroline Lecko, Nutrition and Hydration Week campaigner, said: "We very much look forward to working with Tetley in highlighting that tea can play a crucial role in improving hydration."

McKee said: "I'm thrilled to be working with Tetley on this project. Elderly residents are at increased risk of dehydration, as thirst sensation and detection lessen with age. Regularly offering residents different tea blends not only contributes to overall fluid intake, but becomes part of a wider social occasion in care homes for residents, visitors and carers alike."

Marshall Kingston, senior brand manager - out of home, Tetley, added: "We're proud to share 180 years of expertise with care home catering and care teams. Not only is tea a simple way to keep hydrated, but can provide a familiar comfort for residents, staff and visitors alike within the care home environment."
