Trioni Daioni – Chocolate Flavour Welsh Organic Milk Drink: Award winner

Excellence in Food and Drink Awards 2007
Category: Kids' Drinks
Winner: Trioni Daioni Chocolate Flavour Welsh Organic Milk Drink

Daioni, meaning "goodness" in Welsh, provides a healthy alternative to fizzy drinks for schoolchildren. The milk drink was tested in three secondary schools by children aged 11-18 before going into mass production and is available in four flavours: banana, chocolate, strawberry, and cranberry and raspberry.

The judges, aged five to 12, tested the chocolate drink and praised its flavour. "I liked the taste of this drink, because the chocolate flavour was strong," said one judge. Another added: "It has a nice flavour and is thick and bubbly." A third judge said he liked the "milky taste".

Daioni is available in 250ml and 125ml Prisma packs with a drinking straw attached to the outer packaging. The organic milk drink uses semi-skimmed milk, contains just 1.6% fat and less than 4.5% organic sugar, and all other ingredients are free of artificial colourings and preservatives. Daioni has been approved by the Soil Association, whose logo it carries, and is also suitable for vegetarians.

It has a shelf life of 12 months and can be stored at ambient temperature, although it is best chilled before consumption. Daioni is produced by Trioni, a company formed in 2002 by three organic dairy farmers in west Wales. The company is now run by one farmer, Laurence Harris, in partnership with his wife, Eira.
