Two winners named in Aviko Great British Breakfast Competition
European bar group Belushi's and the Gloucester Old Spot pub in Bristol have won the Great British Breakfast Competition, from foodservice potato specialist Aviko.
The contest, which seeks to celebrate the ‘nation's best morning fuel out-of-home' crowned Gustavo Galvoa, UK food support manager at Belushi's, as winner of the Best Breakfast Bap category for the group's Badass Breakfast Bap, while Amy Devenish, owner of the newly-opened Gloucester Old Spot, scooped the top prize in the Best Hot Breakfast group with its Big One.
Chefs, caterers and operators were encouraged to enter the competition directly, explaining in no more than 50 words what it is that makes their breakfast great. The prize is a weekend for two in London, including breakfast, at the Wolseley.
Winner the Badass Breakfast Bap includes two rashers of smoked back bacon, a fried egg, hash browns, pork sausages and homemade BBQ Jagermeister baked beans in a toasted brioche bun; while the Big One is a full fry-up using locally sourced smoked back bacon, sausages and black pudding with vine tomatoes, garlic Portobello mushrooms, hash browns, spinach, baked beans and a choice of poached, fried or scrambled eggs, plus rosemary and smoked paprika potatoes.
The competition seeks to champion out-of-home breakfasts, in light of Aviko research showing that over a third of people choose to eat breakfast out of the house.
Speaking of his win, Galvoa commented: "We revamped the breakfast menu at Belushi's around five months ago. It's important to us that we offer something unique to kickstart the day, which is why we introduced a full cooked breakfast inside a bap, using Jagermeister in the baked beans for an extra boost! It's exactly what our customers are looking for and we're thrilled to have cemented its popularity further."
Winner Devenish said: "This dish has been on our breakfast menu since the Gloucester Old Spot opened 13 months ago and it's really popular among the hungry diners. We're delighted to have won. The Big One is a massive plate of food and the quality is superb, yet it's also great value for money. We're proud that it's getting the recognition it deserves."
Mohammed Essa, general manager UK and Ireland, Aviko, congratulated the winners, adding: "There's an exciting opportunity for operators to meet this demand and really profit. We wanted to showcase and reward those operators that are going above and beyond with their breakfast offering, and were really impressed with the level of entries."
Aviko has a range of breakfast boosting items including Hash Brown Bites, Bubble & Squeak Rounds and Aviko Hash Browns.
