Compass Group launches Fairtrade Ambassadors Scheme

Compass Group has announced plans to appoint a number of Fairtrade ambassadors to highlight the importance of ethical sourcing, ahead of Fairtrade Fortnight starting next week.

The Fairtrade Ambassador Scheme has been set up to support the caterer's ongoing commitment to Fairtrade, with the new figureheads tasked with inspiring and helping the tens of thousands of employees across Compass to take their own small steps.

Fairtrade Fortnight, which runs from 27 February to 11 March 2012, is the Fairtrade Foundation's campaign to inspire people to take a step for Fairtrade in 2012.

Ian Sarson, group managing director of Compass UK and Ireland, said the company's commitment to Fairtrade is helping farmers, workers and their families throughout developing countries improve their livelihoods, by helping them get a better deal for their products.

"Over the last few years we have achieved a number of industry firsts including swapping to 100% Fairtrade sugar and bananas and I am extremely proud of our achievements to date," he explained.

"It's now time to raise the bar further and through the launch of the Fairtrade Ambassadors Scheme our aim is to engage all of our employees and encourage them to get involved and take important steps for Fairtrade, further supporting these communities across the globe."

Ashish Deo, commercial director of the Fairtrade Foundation, added: "This approach allows real Fairtrade supporters within the Compass business to demonstrate to others how to follow their example. Ultimately driving sales of Fairtrade products throughout the business and delivering real impact for producers."

Compass has maintained double digit sales growth of Fairtrade products over the last six years and its ambassadors will help increase their use within the business, work with the foundation to develop links with towns and schools, and get involved in local Fairtrade events and forums.

They will also receive new Fairtrade product information and insights driven research, and will be invited to attend the Foundation's annual conference and regular webinar updates.
