Millennium and Copthorne set to enter Chinese market

24 November 2005

Millennium and Copthorne Hotels (M&C Hotels) is to open its first hotel in China.

The company has signed a contract with the Shanghai Workers Union, which owns the property, as well as other hotels, villas and spas across the country.

The Millennium Hongqiao Shanghai will be M&C Hotels' first property in the Chinese market, and is scheduled to open mid-2006.

According to the company, the five-star, 350-room hotel has been designed to meet the needs of business travellers.

Mr Vinvet Yeo, president of Asia Pacific for M&C Hotels said that entering China was only the beginning for the company.

"This is the first step for M&C in creating a presence in the Chinese market. We aim to continue expanding our presence in China in key gateway cities," he said.

The Millennium Hongqiao will be located in the city's commercial district, 10 minutes from the airport. The area is growing as a tourist and business destination, with Hongqiao airport handling 13.5 million passengers annually.
