80th Smith & Jones opened

Barracuda Group has opened its 80th Smith & Jones branded pub in Gainsbourgh, Lincolnshire.

The Canute is named after an 11th-century English king who is famed for ordering the tide to turn.

Historians now believe his name was actually Cnut or Knut not the anglicised Canute, but this did not seem to perturb Barracuda's chief executive Mark McQuater.

"I am delighted to open our 80th Smith & Jones pub in Gainsbourgh," he said. "The Canute is also Barracuda's 170th pub and the first opening of 2006."
