Greene King's blames slow Christmas sales on snow

Pub company Greene King has blamed like-for-like sales growth of 1.6% for the two weeks covering Christmas and New Year's Eve on "snow impact".

Greene King estimated that without snowy conditions it would have seen sales of 3.4%. However, despite the adverse weather it achieved total sales of £7.6m, up 2.6% on Christmas 2016.

For the 37 weeks to 14 January Greene King's like-for-like sales were down 1.4% with drink and room sales ahead of the period prior, while food sales remained behind.

The report stated that Greene King "remain on track to deliver targeted cost savings of £40-45m" in 2018/19 and deliver returns of 25%.

The pub chain opened six new sites and disposed of 40 during the period.

Greene King operates 2,903 pubs, restaurants and hotels across England, Wales and Scotland.
