JD Wetherspoon opens first non-smoking pub in Scotland

JD Wetherspoon pub, The Counting House in St Vincent Place, Glasgow has reopened as a non-smoking venue today (19 May).

Wetherspoon's, which supported Caterer's Stub Out Smoking campaign, recently put its pledge to convert 60 of its pubs to non-smoking by the end of May on hold to upgrade its kitchens to meet increased food sales demand.

Pubs that have already converted to non-smoking have seen food sales soar to between 30% and 40%, compared with an average of 25% across the 650-strong estate.

As a result the company is refurbishing its kitchens to meet the increased demand rather than sacrificing performance to meet its self-imposed timetable.

A total of 57 Wetherspoon pubs are now expected to be smoke free by the end of the month.
