Mark Angela to leave Greene King in reorganisation

Greene King pub company managing director Mark Angela is to leave the brewer and pub operator after three years as it reorganises its managed house operations into two divisions.

The two divisions will be split between local pubs and destination pubs to reflect the differing trading styles of the estate, the pub operator announced today.

Jonathan Lawson will become director of local pubs after three years as retail operations director for Sainsbury's Convenience (the retail chain's local and central stores).

Former Hardys and Hansons chief executive Jonathan Webster will become managing director for destination pubs. Both will sit on Greene King's board as Angela steps down on the 16 April.

Local pubs will consist of 510 community and local town pubs while the 280 destination pubs will encompass branded, food-led pubs and hotels.

Managers of the primarily wet-led local pubs will be given greater autonomy to compete with local market conditions but also given a remit to grow their food sales.

The reorganisation is expected to be completed by the end of April with Greene King stating it would lead to no increase in overheads.

Angela joined Greene King in January 2003 from consumer goods company Colgate-Palmolive, where he was most recently general manager of its Hills Pet Nutrition.
