Punch Taverns appoints Greene King director as new CEO

Punch Taverns has appointed Greene King director Clive Chesser as its new chief executive.

Chesser is currently managing director of Greene King's brewing and brands division but will leave the business on 31 May to take up his new post at Punch.

His appointment follows the departure in September last year of Duncan Garrood, who left Punch after its acquisition by Patron Capital and the sale of 1,900 pubs to Heineken.

Steve Dando, Punch's chief financial officer, took charge of the business until a successor was found.

Stephen Green, senior partner of Patron Capital Advisors and director of Punch, said: "We are extremely pleased to have attracted not only the best candidate in the marketplace, but one that I'm confident will provide excellent leadership as we move through this next exciting phase for Punch as a privately owned, independent business, committed to investing heavily in our pubs, our publicans and our people.

"I know Clive is very much looking forward to joining the Punch team and relishing the opportunities ahead.

"Clive has the full support of the Punch executive board and wider team and we look forward to welcoming him to our business. I would also like to thank chief financial officer Steve Dando for his interim leadership of Punch."

Greene King chief executive Rooney Anand said: "Clive has been a strong presence in the business during his time with us, a valued member of the operating board and he leaves a strong legacy in both pub partners and brewing and brands.

"I am sorry to see him go but this is a great opportunity for Clive to take on a chief executive position; he leaves with our sincere thanks for all he has done and our best wishes."

Chesser joined Greene King in 2009 from Enterprise Inns as operations director for Greene King's pub partners arm before becoming managing director for the division in 2015.

In 2017 he moved across to lead the brewing and brands division.

Greene King said it is in the process of appointing a successor for Chesser and expects to be in a position to make an announcement soon.
