Despite strong winds and driving rain, the first National Meals on Wheels Day got off to a flying start last week.
To mark the event, held on 13 November, Roger Denton, chairman of the Advisory Body for Social Services Catering, delivered lunch to health secretary Stephen Dorrell at the House of Commons. He was assisted by Ben Walden, chief executive of ready meals supplier Walden's Wiltshire Foods.
Other well-known faces giving their support included Steven Norris MP, who helped cook meals for Epping District Council in Essex, and chef-proprietor of the Merchant House in Ludlow, Shaun Hill, who helped out in Shropshire.
Mr Denton claimed the day had been a resounding success. "It's an excellent first step," he said. "We are very pleased with the results so far."
The day aimed to raise awareness of the service among MPs and the public.
Next year's event is scheduled for 12 November.
