Cardiff's Coal Exchange hotel to reopen under new management

The Cardiff Coal Exchange hotel will reopen on 8 March under new management after its sudden closure this month.

The 200-room property ceased trading on 17 January and all its employees were made redundant.

Last week, the operators of the hotel, Coal Exchange Operations LLP, said the building's freeholder, Eden Grove Developments, had taken possession of the hotel.

A statement released by Eden Grove said the majority of the senior management team were returning to the hotel and would be "reaching out to staff to discuss [a] potential return to work this week".

However, all bookings for accommodation, the restaurant, weddings and events at the hotel prior to 8 March have been cancelled.

Eden Grove said in a statement: "We understand the disappointment this may cause and urge affected guests to visit our website blog, where comprehensive information on obtaining a refund can be found. We deeply appreciate the understanding and flexibility of our valued guests during this transition period."

The Coal Exchange hotel occupies a Victorian Grade II-listed building and reopened in 2017 following a £40m revamp.

It was part of the Signature Living Group until the business fell into administration in 2020.

Eden Grove said it was working with investors who had bought rooms in the hotel around the reopening.

"Agreements are being put in place to allow the use of more rooms within the hotel," it said in a statement.

"[Investors] will also be represented on the management board, ensuring their interests and vision are well-represented at all times."

Eden Grove said it had appointed an architect and legal representative to support further development of the hotel, with details to be announced in due course.
