Matthew Widdowson and Eric Zwiebel will spearhead the launch of the restaurant this autumn
Former Five Fields general manager Matthew Widdowson and master sommelier Eric Zwiebel have joined Bonheur by Matt Abé, which is opening late autumn in the former Le Gavroche site in London’s Mayfair.
Widdowson was based at the Michelin-starred Five Fields in London’s Chelsea until its closure this February after 12 years of trading.
Prior to that, he was bars manager for D&D London and assistant bar manager at the Cumberland hotel in London’s Marble Arch.
Meanwhile, Zwiebel has joined as head sommelier, having most recently served as director of wine at the Samling in Windermere.
The Alsace-born sommelier was crowned Sommelier of the Year in 2004 and won the Wine and Spirit Ambassador Catey in 2021.
They will work closely with Abé, the former chef patron at the three-Michelin-starred Restaurant Gordon Ramsay, as he prepares to launch his first solo restaurant.
Bonheur by Matt Abé will offer a “fine dining experience designed to inspire complete contentment” and celebrate “seasonality, community and craft”.
Diners can choose from a chef’s table experience, entitled ‘Petit Bonheur’, for six guests; a tasting menu option; and an á la carte selection.
In February, it was confirmed that Abé’s restaurant will be backed by Ramsay, who has secured a 15-year lease on the property.
Albert’s son Michel Roux closed two-Michelin-starred Le Gavroche in 2024 after more than 50 years of trading. He continues to use the Le Gavroche name for pop-ups and residencies.
