The Parisian-Irish bistro takes over the site of the Gannet in Glasgow, which the chef closed last year
Peter McKenna, previously chef-owner of the Gannet in Glasgow, has returned with the launch of new restaurant Eleven Fifty Five.
The 52-cover restaurant opened today (26 February) in the former site of the Gannet, which closed on New Year’s Eve after 12 years of trading, having held three-AA-rosettes for over a decade, in addition to a listing in the Michelin Guide.
Eleven Fifty Five on Argyle Street, Finnieston, takes its inspiration from McKenna’s Irish roots as well as his love for Parisian bistrots.
The neighbourhood bistro will serve dishes such as porchetta with green sauce and confit ratte potatoes; Hannan’s salt aged onglet with fries and chimichurri; and baked beetroot with golden cross, spinach and beetroot salad. Whole cuts of aged beef and fish on the bone from local suppliers will also be available to guests.
McKenna will work alongside maître d’ Kevin Dow, who will also oversee the bar and private dining room, which can cater up to 12 guests for a plated three-course dinner or shared banquet offering.
The new restaurant features furniture made by local carpenters and some recognisable brickwork from its Gannet days.
McKenna, chef-owner of Eleven Fifty Five, said: “To me this feels like a natural evolution - we have stripped back then built up the restaurant and food offering creating a space and menu that will draw you back time and time again. Good honest hospitality with no gimmicks, just great produce cooked with care and respect and a drinks list that is second to none. I can’t wait to share Eleven Fifty Five with our guests.”
